WHAT’S HAPPENING?

A FOURTH! benefit for Safeground is coming up January 17th, 2014 and like past benefits at Luna’s it is going to be a really fun and an enlightening event! At the last show, November 15th, we had a packed house and great performances by Sal Valentino, Hans Eberbach,  Brittany Vanessa, Jackie Carroll, guest speaker, Steve Watters and a debut performance of a really COOL Sacramento hippie band called the  Sad Juicees. Members of the band work at WIND, which provides homeless services to homeless youth. Civil rights attorney and co- founder  of Safeground, Mark Merin, spoke at length about the history of how we got to where we are with extreme poverty in the United States and why we need to help the homeless. We made over $600 in donations which went to Safeground and SHOC (Sacramento Housing Organizing Committee) . This is an all ages event and the donation at the door is $7/sliding scale.

WHO IS PERFORMING?

On the bill of our upcoming show are the following performers:  the very talented Carly Duhain, dubbed the new Janis Joplin, Joe Kye, a Yale educated guitar, violin and voice virtuoso, the always entertaining guitar and kalimba musician/singer, Marty Taters, G.p Bailey, who sings songs from his two albums about the homeless, host Jenn Rogar with special guest Steven Payan from the very popular and longtime Sacramento hip hop group Mentes Differentes. Also performing again is the great Sal Valentino of  Beau Brummels and Stoneground fame, the very talented Darin Bradford and Wasteland and the beautiful and beyond melodic Sandra Delores who, according to Sal “can sing the phone book.”  All proceeds will go to Safeground and SHOC. Money is being raised for Safeground to help build the future Safeground community of 80 cabins on 21/2 acres for the homeless. “We are very close”, says, Executive Director of Safeground, Steve Watters. These concerts help bring awareness and hopefully new activists who want to get involved in the struggle for the homeless and the poor.

SPECIAL THANK YOU’S

I have been so blessed with so many of Sacramento’s finest singer-songwriters and musicians who have asked or agreed to perform and donate their wonderful talent to helping bring awareness to homelessness in Sacramento and funds for Safeground and SHOC.  I went to Art Luna about the idea, not long after the Safeground Sacramento Stakedown on May 1-8 and asked about doing the concerts there. At our very first concert, on June 15, 2013 we had JD Valerio, James Israel, G.p Bailey, myself and  Patrick Grizzell.  At the second benefit on Sept 20th, 2013 we had Gary Weinberg, Gene Smith Lives!, with Kristine David and Nick Embly, the  Jackie Carroll Jazz Trio, Marty Taters, John Malcolm, guest speaker Steve Watters, Executive Director of Safeground, and Darin Bradford. Thank you!! to all who have performed so far! Your talented and beautiful people! Thank you Art Luna and see you there at the next Safeground benefit on January 17th!
